Indonesian-Australian Carbon Trade Cooperation of AUS$ 30 Million
Tuesday, 02 March, 2010 | 18:31 WIB

TEMPO Interactive, Jakarta:The Indonesian and Australian governments have agreed on carbon trade cooperation of AUS$ 30 million.

According to Forestry Minister Zulkifli Hasan, representing the Indonesian government, they have reached an agreement deal with the Australian Minister of Climate Change and Water Penny Wong.

“There is already a commitment from both sides. This will be realized during the President’s visit there,” said Zulkifli to Tempo after a coordination meeting discussing President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono’s plan to visit Australia and Papua New Guinea on 8 March 2010.

The Forestry Minister added that the cooperation is part of the Indonesian-Australian framework partnership forest carbon partnership agreed by Prime Minister Rudd and President Yudhoyono in June 2008.

The bilateral partnership will be realized to reduce emissions caused by deforestation and forest degradation in Jambi province.

According to Zulkifli, Jambi was chosen because a third of its area, or about 1.7 million hectare, was deforested.

”The spatial planning keeps on changing because of land function modifications that cause greenhouse emissions,” he said.
