Calls for Withdrawal of Chinese Melamine from Distribution
Monday, 21 December, 2009 | 18:50 WIB
TEMPO Interactive, Jakarta:The Indonesian Packaging Federation has urged the government to recall Chinese melamine products that do not meet Indonesia’s national standard. “This is to protect the consumers,” said the Federation’s chief in charge of Industrial Relations and Administration, Yoesoef Santo, at the Industry Department on Thursday.
Yoesoef called on the government to take firm action, saying, “If they cannot meet the standard, they must not be allowed to enter the country.” He also stressed that it is Indonesia’s national standard that must be applied, although China also has its own standard for its products.
However, Yoesoef admitted it was not easy to recall these products because many people have used them. “From restaurants to small food stalls. This is a problem,” he said, adding that if the government was serious, the distribution of these Chinese melamine products should be halted for six months.
