TEMPO Interactive, Jakarta: Indonesia has retained its seat in the board of International Maritime Organization for the next 2009 – 2011 term, the Maritime and Fisheries Department said on Monday.

Minister Freddy Numberi said “Indonesia was classified into C category members which will be dealing with main issues of safety, environment and law.”

Indonesia, Freddy said secured 132 votes, or the third highest vote after Singapore and Cyprus. The other members in the category are Turkey, the Philippines, Malta, Egypt, Nigeria, Malaysia, South Afrika, Chile, Bahama, Denmark, Mexico, Kenya, Saudi Arabia, Belgium, Australia, Jamaica, and Thailand.

The selection bears several commitments that the government have to adhere to, like security assurance in the Malacca Strait, improved sea transport safety, and the ratification of around 19 conventions which include the Search and Rescue Convention, the Hazardous and Noxious Substances Convention, the Bunker Convention, the Anti Fouling System Convention, the Ballast Water Management Convention, the Wreck Removal Convention, and MARPOL Annex III – VI.
