TEMPO Interactive, Semarang:Commission D of the Central Java Provincial House of Representatives (DPRD) called on Central Java provincial government to use strict penalties to illegal miners using heavy machinery. “They must be processed according to the laws. Give them the maximum penalty,” Commission D member Alwin Basri said yesterday.
Alwin said these kinds of miners have caused extensive damage to the environment. For them, he said, it was not a matter of survival but more because they want to get as much profit as possible without caring for the environment.
Alwin, from the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDIP) also said that the number of miners is increasing everyday, especially around the Mount Merapi areas of Magelang, Klaten and Boyolali, as well as the Sindoro-Sumbing areas in Temanggung and Wonosobo.
The Central Java Energy and Mineral Resources Office chief, Teguh Dwi Paryono, said his office will continue to regulate excavation works. “We will apply the regulations strictly,” he said.
