Domestic Violence Cases in Bali Increase
Friday, 03 July, 2009 | 13:34 WIB

TEMPO Interactive, Denpasar: The amount of cases of domestic violence in Bali is increasing. Unfortunately, women who are the victims of the violence tend not to report cases to the police.

Ida Bagus Alit from the Forensic Division of the Sanglah Public Hospital stated that there were 164 cases against women in 2008. During the first six months in 2009, 78 cases have already been recorded.

“It is almost more than half of the total cases from last year,” she said, on Friday (3/7), during the socialization program of the Regional Decree over Human Trafficking Prevention and Elimination.

Out of 164 cases in 2008, 33 were cases of domestic violence. While in 2009, out of 78 cases, 63 were cases of domestic violence.

Out of the 63 cases of domestic violence, only 44 cases were reported to the police.

Alit said that most victims decide to report a case when experiencing more violence.

Alit went on to say that victims of domestic violence receive special treatment.

In order to increase physician's capability in treating the victims, the Medical Faculty at Udayana University has arranged a special curriculum.
