Tangerang Workers Clash With Authority

TEMPO Interactive, Jakarta: Over 1,000 workers clashed with authorities in Tangerang regency in Banten Province on Monday in a protest against the joint ministerial regulation on workers wage.

Around 1,500 workers from different companies in industrial city of Tangerang scoured into the Regencial Administration offiece, to reject the minimum pay regulation issued by four minister in October to address the recent financial crisis. A number of security personnel were injured and the attack damaged parts of the office building.

The workers from various trade unions voiced the same concern over the regulation despite their different fields of concern on their struggle for workers' rights.

It was the latest in a series of protests against the regulation introduced in October by the Labor Ministry, Trade Ministry, Industry Ministry, and the Home Affairs Ministry.

Also on Monday, workers in Medan North Sumatra took to the street and handed their protest against the regulation to the regional House of representatives.
