TEMPO Interactive, Yogyakarta: The Faculty of Agricultural Technology at Gadjah Mada University (UGM) in Yogyakarta, is working together with farmers' groups to develop a technique in the planting System of Rice Intensification (SRI). “Based on trials, can produce 8-9 tons of rice per hectare while it is only 5.4-6 ton with conventional way,” said Dr. Sigit Supadmo, the faculty's researcher and lecturer, yesterday.
He explained that basically the technique is about choosing a good seed, proper distance between seeds, and proper depth in planting the seed. With these techniques, farmers can save 50 percent of fertilizer.
