Wednesday, 20 August, 2008 | 12:00 WIB
TEMPO Interactive, Timika: The entire city of Timika, Papua, was almost totally blacked out on Tuesday (19/8).
There were only few houses and small kiosks with electricity connected from PT Freeport Indonesia or by using personal generators.
The electricity cut happened started on Tuesday morning.
Hormat Pakpahan, supervisor of the state power plant for Timika, said that the power cut was caused by a diesel shortage.
“The electricity will be on again at 6 to 9pm,” said Hormat.
Due to the power cut, banking transactions through ATM centers, telecommunication and internet centers, and traffic lights were unable to be carried out.
On Wednesday (20/8), the electricity will only work between 7.30 and 8am (Eastern Indonesian time) and a few hours in the evening.
It has not yet been reported what the losses are due to the power cut in Timika city.
