Lack of Subsidy for Free Education
Friday, 02 May, 2008 | 16:06 WIB

TEMPO Interactive, Jakarta: Education Minister Bambang Sudibyo said free education cannot be feasible in the near future. “It’s difficult to allocate 20 percent of the State budget for education,” he said after commemorating national education day at the Education Department, Friday (02/05).

Bambang said, the government has many important subsidies that must be allocated from the state budget. The government cannot easily reduce the subsidy as it will create resistance. “There will be resistance while the subsidies are increased every year.”

He said that by increasing school operational costs for a free education system it still needs more study and likely it will be difficult to apply. “This is a contradiction,” Bambang said.
