Improving Public Services by Evaluating Performance of Regional Governments

TEMPO Interactive, Jakarta: The government will evaluate the performance of regional governments in order to improve the quality of public services.
This will be the foundation of design master plan for the performance of regional governments in Indonesia.
Saut Situmorang, spokesperson for the Home Affairs Department, said the evaluation will be carried out by referring to responsibility reports made by regional leaders as well as a public survey about public services.
“This is to improve governance performance,” he told journalists at the Home Affairs Department on Wednesday (30/4).
The evaluation will involve the Home Affairs Department, the State Minister for Administrative Reforms, the Justice and Human Rights Minister, the State Secretary, the Head of the National Development Planning Board (Bappenas), the National Civil Service Agency, the Supreme Audit Agency, the Central Bureau of Statistics, and the State Administration Agency.
They will work as a national team while technical and regional evaluating teams will be also formed.
“We will involve experts and independent institutions in order to have an objective perspective,” said Saut.
Up until now, there has been no firm indicator to evaluate governance performance.
“This is what holds back the quality of our public services,” he said.
Saut said the evaluation would maintain keep the validity principle.
“We will evaluate performance through responsibility reports and a public survey,” he said.
