Trafficking Comes From Patriarchy Culture
Friday, 04 April, 2008 | 15:28 WIB
TEMPO Interactive, Jakarta: Trafficking and violence to women and children are actually the consequence of the culture.
“It is a reflection of the patriarchy values dominating many places in the world,” said Meutia Hatta, State Minister for Women’s Empowerment, in the opening of International Council of Women's Executive Committee Meeting and Asia-Pacific Regional Council Seminar II, at the Sultan Hotel, Jakarta, today.
It is supported by misinterpretation in religious teaching, low educational level in the community, and poverty.
Globalization also contributes negative impact to gender equality. It creates job opportunities without fair competition that makes unfair job division and payment disparity between different gender.
The increased trafficking issue and violence to women and children are also influenced by the underdeveloped skills of women, more female students drop out of their schools, a low monitoring system at state borders, increased poverty, and lower law enforcement's sensitivity to these issues. There is no comprehensive statistical data about trafficking victims and information about the syndicate network.
