DPR to Summon Yusril and KPK Head

TEMPO Interactive, Jakarta: Agung Laksono, Speaker of the House of Representatives (DPR) Chairman, said that the DPR will summon State Secretary Yusril Ihza Mahendra and Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) Head Taufiequrachman Ruki.
The summons is related to the current tension between the two state officials.
“The matter must be resolved,” said Agung at his office, yesterday (21/2).
So far the DPR has not yet confirmed when they will be summoned.
Agung only said that Yusril will be asked to be at a joint session with Commission II for Governance while Ruki will be summoned by Commission III for Law.
He has also asked President Yudhoyono to establish an independent team to investigate the case of direct appointment at the two institutions.
“So that the result will be independent, not on any one institution’s side,” said Agung.
The need to establish an independent team was also conveyed by Hidayat Nur Wahid, Chairman of the People’s Consultative Assembly (MPR).
He asked that the institutions be studied by legal experts and the DPR, adding: “The President must also give permission”.
However, Attorney General Abdul Rahman Saleh said he regarded establishing an independent team would be impossible to carry out.
“What is the basis for an independent team? There isn’t any procedural law,” said the attorney general yesterday.
Abdul Rahman Saleh acknowledged that Yusril’s claim about direct appointment for tapping device procurement at the KPK actually created procedural problems.
It was impossible for the KPK leader, he said, to be scrutinized by the KPK itself.
“In the future, such a mechanism must be made.”
However, Abdul Rahman Saleh said he believed that an investigation into the KPK Head could be performed by another institution.
“This can be carried out by the National Chief of Police,” he said.
