TEMPO Interactive, Jakarta: The Indonesian Police is prioritizing eradication of illegal mining in 2007. “Any illegal mining such as coal, tin or gold,” said Deputy Head of Indonesian Police Commissioner General Makbul Padmanagara during a press conference at the Indonesian Police Headquarters Friday (12/29).
The priority to eradicate illegal mining by police emerged since the Chief of Indonesian Police General Sutanto sent a letter to Energy and Mineral Resources Minister Purnomo Yusgiantoro to cut off the contract with PT Koba Tin in Bangka Belitung.
Up until today, the Energy Minister is yet to eliminate the contract with Koba Tin. The company is still operating in Bangka Belitung. In addition to tin, coal and gold, police will look at sea sand exports in 2007.
Priority to illegal mining eradication was set, said Makbul, after police has succeeded in eradicating illegal logging. He stated that, the police viewed as successful in the Operation of the Eternal Forest I and II, cooperated with the Department of Forestry. “However, for now and from now on, we will watch exported logs, especially a new way, such as through sawmills in order to be stamped, so that they look like legal logs,” he said.
