TEMPO Interactive, Jakarta: A team of the Munir case at the House of Representatives (DPR) has recommended that the government form an independent investigative team soon to inquire into the case of the human rights activist's death. The team will be under the supervision of the Chief of Indonesian Police and will be fully responsible to the President.
The recommendation was brought forth by a team of the Munir case in the DPR Plenary Session yesterday (12/7). Head of the team Taufikurrahman Saleh argued that the formation of the independent team is required to show commitment, will, and seriousness of the government and law enforcement in solving the Munir case.
The DPR team has also has asked that President to announce the Fact Finder Team's findings to the public. “It will be part of the President's commitment,” he said during the reading of the recommendation.
In addition, said Taufikurrahman, the DPR team has asked that Chief of Indonesian Police to coordinate with related ministers to uncover the case.
Coordinator of the Commission for Lost People and Victims of Violence Usman Hamid welcomed the recommendation. He hoped that, after this, the DPR team can meet the President directly to discuss the n recommendation.
The most important matter, said Usman, is that DPR assures the public that the government will carry out all recommendations. “Recommendation is not enough. There must be ways that the recommendation is enforced by the government, especially by the President,” said Usman.
