TEMPO Interactive, Jakarta: The Republic of Indonesia National Police (Polri) has been asked to clarify why the Indonesian Military (TNI) must retire before taking part in regional leader elections.
“Polri’s duty is to pacify, later it can be just,” said the House of Representatives (DPR) Commission for Defense Dedy Djamaludin Malik.
According to him, Polri’s firmness is in fact more important, bearing in mind its role in society. DPR must voice its opinion and ask Police Chief Gen. Sutanto to state the commitment.
Dedy praised TNI’s measure which is to accord with the reformation spirit. The decision about early retirement can maintain the relations of TNI’s duties, between professionalism on the mission to defend the country and politics. “Polri must follow TNI’s action,” he said when contacted in Bandung.
