Corruption Erradication Commission: Perception Index Still Low

TEMPO Interactive, Jakarta: The Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) has the opinion that the Indonesian Corruption Perception Index is lower compared to what Transparency International reported.
According to KPK Chairman, Taufiequrrachman Ruki, the low index is because the principle of good governance is not being applied. “Corruption is not because of bad people but bad governance,” said Ruki in his press conference. Presidential Instruction No. 5/2004 on the Acceleration of Corruption Eradication, does not affect corruption eradication according to him.
“That only became a document saved in the desk of the government working unit leader,” said Ruki. Transparency International announced the Corruption Perception Index of several countries. Indonesia’s corruption perception index rose from 2.2 last year to 2.4 in 2006. Indonesia’s rank also went up to the 130th place from 163 countries, previously 133rd from 146 countries.
