Yogyakarta’s Quake Emergency Response Period to be Extended
Tuesday, 27 June, 2006 | 13:01 WIB
TEMPO Interactive, Bantul: A one-month stage for the emergency response period to handle the Yogyakarta quake victims will be extended. The emergency response period to distribute aid for living costs is impossible to finish on time because up to now many quake victims have not received anything.
“We don’t dare to stop the emergency response period if the staple needs of the quake victims haven't been fulfilled. Out of 16 districts in Bantul, only nine have obtained food aid including rice,” said Idham Samawi, Bantul regent, during Recovery of Bantul gathering, yesterday (26/6).
According to Idham, the sluggish aid distribution in the emergency response period is due to limited funds. So far the Bantul regency government has only received Rp39 billion in spite of Rp70 billion required funds for living cost distribution.
“Even I myself am not sure that by the end of this month the emergency response period can end. Because for Bantul only, seven districts haven't received food. Other areas are not yet counted,” said Idham.
He said the quake victims in the seven districts which haven't received any living costs are in Sewon, Banguntapan, Kasihan, Sedayu, Kretek, Sanden and Srandakan.
