TEMPO Interactive, Jakarta: A closed consultative meeting between House of Representatives (DPR) and faction leaders has urged the DPR Commission for Law to re-examine the Trisakti and Semanggi cases.
The meeting resulted that the Commission of Law must review the recommendations made by the DPR Special Committee for the 1999-2004 period.
“We request that Commission III at DPR, which deals with law matters, to review the Trisakti and Semanggi cases,” said Nursjahbani Katjasungkana of the People's Awakening Party (PKB) faction yesterday (14/6) at the parliamentary complex.
According to him, the outcome from DPR Commission III will be presented to a DPR Consultative Body meeting so that it can be scheduled for the DPR Plenary Session.
The Trisakti and Semanggi tragedies were previously examined at a DPR Special Committee meeting.
At that time, the committee recommended that the tragedies were not serious violations in terms of human rights.
The members of the committee believed that the tragedies should have been taken to military courts.
However, the 2004-2009 members of the DPR demanded in May 2005 at an internal meeting of DPR Commission III that the Trisakti and Semanggi cases be reviewed.
Nursjahbani has said that had the plenary session resulted in the expected decision.
The DPR will request that the President set up an ad hoc court for Human Rights.
“This court will later handle the Trisakti and Semanggi cases,” he said.
According to Nursjahbani, in a restricted consultative meeting between the DPR and faction leaders that led by Agung Laksono, Head of DPR, it was only the Golkar Party who disagreed with the meeting decision.
