Indonesia Asks ASEAN to Affirm Corruption as a Transnational Crime

TEMPO Interactive, Denpasar: Indonesia has asksed the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) affirm corruption as one of transnational crimes.
This was proposed during the ASEAN Senior Official Meeting in the Sixth Forum of Transnational Crimes (SOMTC) in Kuta Bali, today (7/6).
According to Commissioner General Makbul Padmanegara, Head of Research and Crime Board at the Indonesian National Police (Polri), who is also the head of the forum's committee, the proposal was based on the joint interest of ASEAN countries to eradicate corruption in their own countries.
In addition, corruption crimes are currently indicated by the trend of suspects together with their ill-gotten gains running away to other countries.
Makbul denied that the proposal is related to Indonesia's difficulties in pursuing corruption cases suspects, for example suspects who have run away to Singapore.
“Our proposal does not refer to any case related to a certain country,” he emphasized.
Indonesia's proposal is based on the the United Nation's Convention on Corruption Eradication, which has also been signed by Indonesia.
