Thursday, 04 May, 2006 | 14:24 WIB

TEMPO Interactive, Jakarta: The government is to establish a National Transportation Safety Board to formulate safety policies in the transportation sector.
This board will consist of government officials, practitioners, and experts in transportation.

It is expected that the board will be established by December this year.

“We are currently formulating the regulatiosn and the people who will join this board,” said Transportation Minister, Hatta Radjasa in Jakarta, yesterday (3/5).

The board will work to determine the direction, strategy and matters related to the efforts to minimize accidents in the transportation sector.

According to Hatta, this board will not work as a Transportation Accident National Committee to carry out investigations.

“The scope of work of this board is more at the policy level,” he said.

A total of 30,464 people die in traffic accidents in Indonesia every year.
