Indonesia to Accelerate IMF Debt Payment

TEMPO Interactive, Jakarta: Bank of Indonesia Deputy Governor, Miranda Goeltom, said Indonesia plans to accelerate its debt payment to the International Monetary Fund (IMF).
“It's almost certain. The point is the payment is to be stepped up,” she told reporters during the break of Indonesia Syariah Expo 2006 in Jakarta, Tuesday (2/5).
She said she does not yet know how many stages there are in paying the debt to the IMF. However, she said, the debt payment is open. “Our foreign exchange reserves are very high,” she said.
According to Bank of Indonesia Governor, Burhanuddin Abdullah, Indonesia's foreign exchange reserves has now reached its peak in history. “The most recent amount was US$43 billion,” he said. Last month, Indonesia's foreign exchange reserves was US$41 billion.
