TEMPO Interactive, Denpasar: The appeal by two Australian citizens, Andrew Chan, 21, and Myuran Sukumaran, 24, who received the death penalty by a Denpasar District Court, was declined by the Bali High Court.
However, Marthin Eric Stephens, Michael William Tzugaj, Scott Anthony Rush, Tan Duc Tanh Nguyen and Renae Lawrence had their life sentences decreased to a twenty-year jail term.
The Deputy Chairman of the Bali High Court, HA Pardede, said the decision was taken at the appeal trial at the Bali High Court. “A death sentence was agreed because they’re the brains behind the crime,” he said yesterday.
Meanwhile, sentences for the other five defendants were reduced as they’re considered to be couriers in the process of exporting the heroin, weighing 8.2 kilograms.
