TEMPO Interactive, Jakarta: Arist Merdeka Sirait, Secretary General of the National Commission for Protection of Children, has stated that there were 18,700 cases of violence against children in 2005.
“We got the data only from National Commission for the Protection of Children offices throughout Indonesia,” she told Tempo in Jakarta, Tuesday (11/4).
According to Arist, the data could not considered as fully accurate data that shows the actual total cases of violence against children every year.
“The phenomenon is like the tip of an iceberg, what is visible always looks smaller than the reality” she said.
Arist explained that there are three types of cases of violence against children: physical, sexual and psychological.
“For Jakarta, in 2005 there were a total of 736 cases listed, and between January and March this year, there have been 236 cases,” she said.
In addition, in 2005, the 736 cases in Greater Jakarta comprised 223 physical violence cases, 327 sexual violence cases and 176 psychological violence cases.
