West Irian Jaya Asks for Legal Basis
Friday, 07 April, 2006 | 14:48 WIB
TEMPO Interactive, Jakarta: The Chairman of the West Irian Jaya Provincial Legislative Council, Jimmy Demianus Ijie demanded that the government include the special autonomy of West Irian Jaya in the State Decree No. 21/2001 on Papua Special Autonomy.
“Don’t talk about the special autonomy fund, revise the law first,” he told the press yesterday.
As a result, the similarity among the Papuan in Papua and West Irian Jaya provinces can be developed.
Jimmy also hopes President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono issues a Presidential Decree clarifying that the special autonomy is a result of Decree No. 21/2001.
Another option is creating a new Decree. “If that happens, we’ll be happy,” said Jimmy.
