Indonesia Supports Nuclear Program in Iran with Conditions
Thursday, 29 December, 2005 | 10:43 WIB
TEMPO Interactive, Jakarta:Mochamad Asruchin, director for South Asia and Central Asia regions at the Department of Foreign Affairs, has stated that Indonesia would not fully support the nuclear program in Iran.
If Iran plans to develop nuclear weapons, Asruchin said, Indonesia would not support the program.
“We do not support Iran all out. Our position does not support nuclear power for weapons,” he stated on Tuesday (27/12).
Basically, according to Asruchin, Indonesia does not think that Iran is developing nuclear weapons.
Earlier, Iran parliament chairman Gholam Ali Haddad Adel thanked the Indonesian government for supporting Iran’s nuclear program.
Asruchin considered Adel’s statement as a “good thing.”
According to him, Indonesia’s position must be to strongly oppose all development of nuclear weapons except for peace purposes.
“Not only for Iran, but for all countries developing nuclear technology in the public interest, such as for electric power generators,” stated Asruchin.
