Terrorists: A High Risk of Car Bombs
Saturday, 26 November, 2005 | 12:41 WIB

TEMPO Interactive, Jakarta:The reason why the bombing perpetrators in Bali changed their method from cars to backpacks was because the backpack was easy to be bring everywhere.

According to National Police Chief Gen. Sutanto, the documents found during the raid on Dr. Azahari and his cohorts in Batu have indicated that the use of car bombs require a great deal of money and at least three-week’s preparation. In addition, a house with a garage must be rented.

Besides, the car bomb has a high risk because the car is likely to be identified by police officers. The backpack bomb, however, can be taken everywhere. “They have studied and replaced the car bomb with the backpack,” stated Sutanto to reporters on Friday (25/11).

The documents, added Sutanto, also revealed the strategy of the bombing perpetrators in their journey from Malang to Bali so that they could flee from police officers while crossing to Gilimanuk port.

Sutanto denied that based on the documents, the bombing was scheduled to take place on the third anniversary of Bali bombing I, which took place on October 12, 2002. According to Sutanto, the documents only mentioned the places used as targets.

According to the document, Sutarto said, the Bali bombing was scheduled to take place on October 1, 2005. “If the bombing were carried out on the anniversary of Bali bombing I, there would be police and equipment securing the area. The perpetrators found gaps in other days, when the police were unprepared,” stated Sutanto. (Erwin Dariyanto-Tempo News Room)
