GAM Hands Over Another 28 Weapons
Tuesday, 15 November, 2005 | 22:02 WIB

TEMPO Interactive, Banda Aceh:The Free Aceh Movement (GAM) handed over 28 weapons to the Aceh Monitoring Mission (AMM) in Peulanteu village, Bubon sub-district, Aceh Barat, 22 kilometers north of Meulaboh city on Tuesday (15/11). The surrender of the weapons was carried out by GAM in the Aceh Barat and Nagan Raya areas.

According to Nipak Thonglek, a member of the AMM, only 14 out of 28 weapons were received. Meanwhile, there were questions remaining about another 14 weapons. “The surrender of the weapons was delayed for an hour because of heavy rain,” stated Thonglek.

However, there was no problem in the current surrender of weapons. Thonglek said that he was glad to see that most of the weapons met the requirements. The next relinquishing of weapons will take place by GAM of Aceh Barat Daya and Aceh Selatan regions.

In the third stage, GAM must hand over 240 weapons or one fourth of the total amount of weapons claimed to be owned by the group. This is according to the peace agreement between the government and GAM in Helsinki on August 14, 2005. (Adi Warsidi-Tempo News Room)
