Wednesday, 12 October, 2005 | 02:39 WIB

TEMPO Interactive, Jakarta:The police have shown progress in the investigation of the bombing case in Kuta and Jimbaran. The police are now focusing their attention on someone with the initials HS. “We’re investigating the relationship between HS and the bombing incident,” said National Police headquarters (HQ) Brig. Gen. Soenarko in Denpasar on Tuesday (11/10).

From the questioning of the witnesses, the police received information that one of the suicide bombers, with the initials YT, lived with his three friends in a rented house in Denpasar, Bali. The team left for Jember, East Java to arrest a man HS. On Sunday morning (09/10), the Bali and East Java Police caught HS, who then was taken to the Bali Police to undergo questioning by an investigative team.

According to Soenarko, the police made use of Law No.15/2003 on eradication of terrorism. One of the Articles stipulates that detectives can make an arrest which can last up to seven days of a person allegedly linked to terrorism activities. They then can ask for an extension if the situation warrants it. “HS, who is a construction worker, is still under arrest with the Bali Police,” Soenarko stated.

From the information in the field, the rented house where YT and some of his friends, including HS, had stayed is a rented house on Nangka Selatan street, Denpasar. They rented a room on September 1, 2005, and disappeared on October 1, 2005 (morning) following the bombing in Kuta Square and Jimbaran.

According to one of the residents of the house, Sulastri, the police’s questioning related to four inhabitants who disappeared on October 1, 2005. “They posed questions of their identity and physical features,” said Sulastri. The missing inhabitants resided in the house since early September 2005 and asked permission to leave to Sanur, Denpasar, on October 1, 2005. “But, they did not return ,” said Sulastri. “They rented a 3 x 4 room for Rp200,000 per month. They had Madura accents and usually left in the morning and returned at night.” (Rofiqi Hasan-Tempo News Room)
