Indonesia Will Not Propose Anything Regarding UN Security Council Reform
Friday, 09 September, 2005 | 11:32 WIB
TEMPO Interactive, Jakarta:The Indonesian government agrees that the United Nations (UN) Security Council must be reformed.
However, the government will not propose anything regarding the council’s reform at next week’s UN Summit at UN headquarters in New York.
Ali Alatas, chairman of Panel 45 and a former foreign minister, made this statement after delivering a report to President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono at the presidential office on Thursday (08/09).
This panel was formed by the President to provide him with inputs before he delivers his speech at the UN Summit, where reform within the UN is on the agenda.
Alatas said that the government agrees with the expansion of the membership of the UN Security Council (UNSC), whether this includes permanent or non-permanent members.
However, the government thinks that there should be criteria for a country to become a permanent member of the UNSC.
“Don’t just appoint countries, two countries from Asia, two countries from Africa, however what about the criteria?” stated Alatas.
According to the former foreign minister, the input given by the Panel 45 to the President, if he approves by them, shall be distributed at the UN Summit as Indonesia’s stance regarding reform within the UN.
The input from this panel will also be used as material for President Yudhoyono’s speech at this forum. (Dimas Adityo-Tempo News Room)
