TEMPO Interactive, Jakarta:House of Representatives (DPR) Speaker Agung Laksono has stated that the agreement that will be made with the Free Aceh Movement (GAM) is the Indonesian government’s domain.
The DPR would only be involved following the amendment of the law related to GAM’s demand regarding the establishment of local parties.
“From a formal legal point of view, the peace agreement does not need the approval of the DPR,” said Laksono at the legislature complex in Jakarta on Monday (25/07).
He however went on to say some substance of the agreement need to be discussed with DPR in a consultation forum to avoid any misunderstandings.
This consultation forum will be held following the return of President Yudhoyono from People’s Republic of China.
Laksono requested a more detailed explanation that what was provided to several DPR faction leaders at the residence of Vice President Jusuf Kalla last week.
As regards local parties, he continued, this must have the approval of DPR as this would be against the state decree.
The local parties concept requested by GAM provides access for the movements to channel its political aspirations.
“However, at least GAM has agreed to be part of the Unitary State of the Indonesian Republic,” said Laksono.
