Pollycarpus Could Receive Death Sentence

TEMPO Interactive, Jakarta:National Police chief of detectives Comm. Gen. Makbul Padmanegara has said that Pollycarpus Budi Haripriyanto, the suspect in the murder case of Indonesian human rights activist Munir, has been charged under article 340 of the Criminal Code with pre-meditated murder and under article 263 of the Criminal Code with the counterfeiting of letters.

Pollycarpus faces the maximum sentence, the death sentence.

“This is based on the investigation and questioning of witnesses,” said Padmanegara after a working meeting with House of Representatives (DPR) Commission II on Monday (27/06).

Regarding a reconstruction carried out on June 23, 2005, according to Padmanegara, several witnesses Pollycarpus coming in and out of the airplane’s pantry many times.

“However, Polly still does not admit this.”

In response to this report, Trimedya Panjaitan, a member of DPR Commission III from the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P), suggested that Polly be questioned using a lie detector.

“In order to check the honesty of Pollycarpus, we can no longer use conventional ways,” said Trimedya Panjaitan.

As for passenger listed as number 15, Padmanegara confirmed that this was not Bambang Irawan, who was assumed to be a medical doctor from Special Force Command.

Irawan, Padmanegara said, was proven not to be on the Garuda airplane in which Munir was a passenger.
“We have shown photos and no witness could identify Irawan,” said Padmanegara.

Dossiers on Pollycarpus’ case were handed over to Attorney General’s Office (AGO) on June 14, 2005.

“This is only the first handing over, in form of procedure case, if the prosecutors’ office considers this inadequate, the detectives can complete them again,” said Padmanegara.

According to Padmanegara, the case dossiers are yet to be finished.

Meanwhile, the police detectives are also yet to hand over the dossiers on two Garuda airline stewardess who are named suspects in the case, Yetty and Oedi.
