Australian Government Letter Is Not Related to Corby’s Case

TEMPO Interactive, Jakarta:The letter sent by Australian government to Indonesian court before the sentence imposed on Schapelle Corby, the alleged marijuana smuggler, only explained about the investigation carried out in Sydney airport, Australia. “So, it has nothing to do with Corby’s case,” said Australian Embassy spokesman Elizabeth O’Neil to Tempo News Room on Tuesday (17/05).

O’Neil said that the letter was written by Australian foreign and trade first secretary Rod Smith and not by Australian Attorney General. According to O’Neil, this is not an effort to intervene the court in Indonesia.

“Australian government knows that Indonesian court could not be intervened. The judges have said that,” O’Neil stated.

The letter given by Corby’s lawyer, Lili Lubis, said O’Neil, came as an explanation that the investigation carried out in Sydney Airport was related to the cocaine syndicate. “So, it has nothing to do with marijuana. Not at all,” stated O’Neil.

According to O’Neil, this letter has been used by Corby’s lawyer to point out that the syndicate had used employees in the airport to smuggle drugs.


O’Neil added that the investigation is yet to result anything and it will continue. Whether or not these proofs will be proposed to the court, O’Neil said that Australian government knew this would be impossible. “It is possible if there is an effort at the appeal level,” stated O’Neil.

Indonesian Ambassador for Australia Imron Cotan said that the letter was dated May 13, 2005, and sent to Corby’s lawyer, Lili Lubis. This letter was written as an answer to Corby’s lawyer request that questioned whether or not there has been a drug syndicate trafficking from Australia. (Yophiandi-Tempo News Room)
