Indonesian Consulate-General in Perth Receives Threat
Saturday, 16 April, 2005 | 14:09 WIB
TEMPO Interactive, Jakarta:The Indonesian government has requested that the Australian government pay very serious attention to a threat against the Indonesian Consulate General in Perth.
“We hope that Australian government can handle this matter effectively,” said Indonesian foreign minister Hassan Wirajuda on Wednesday (13/04).
Indonesia’s Consulate General office in Perth received a threat along with two bullets in an envelope.
The content of the threat letter read: “If Schapelle Corby is not released immediately, you all will receive one of these bullets in your brain.”
Corby is currently being detained and is on trial for allegedly possessing and smuggling 1.4 kilo of hashish to Bali.
She could receive the death penalty should she be proven guilty in this case.
The case has received huge attention from both Australian and Indonesian governments.
According to Wirajuda, Australian foreign minister Alexander Downer met with him two weeks ago in Canberra, Australia.
“The matter was also discussed during the visit made by Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono to Australia,” Wirajuda stated.
The Australian government has requested that the Indonesian government allow evidence and witnesses to be brought in from Australia.
According to Wirajuda, this request is understandable.
However, the Indonesian government has also said that the legal process is taking place in Indonesia so this is considered as the judicial authority.
“It all depends on the judges in the case. Will bringing witnesses and evidence from Australia be considered representative and acceptable in the investigation process?” he said. (Yophiandi-Tempo News Room)
