TEMPO Interactive, Jakarta:Former President Megawati Soekarnoputri has been re-elected as Chairperson of the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P) for the 2005-2009 period.
She receives more than 75 percent supports of votes.
Her election was announced during the plenary meeting III in the Agung Ballroom at Inna Grand Bali Beach Hotel on Thursday (31/3).
This decision was made during the middle of the III plenary meeting which actually was planned for the reading of the results of the commission’s meeting.
After the reading, suddenly the head of the meeting, Frans Leburaya, who is also the head of the Regional Legislative Council and the Deputy Governor of East Nusa Tenggara, offered to carry out the chairperson’s election.
There were many interruptions because of this, from West Irian Jaya, South Sumatra, and West Java, who wanted the plenary meeting agenda to be completed first before continuing with the chairperson’s election.
But these interruptions were ignored by the head of the meeting.
Amidst support for Mega, Frans Leburaya decided that the members should propose their candidates for chairperson.
Without voting, only by gauging suppors from the forum, the head of the meeting decided Megawati Soekarnoputri as a chairperson candidate because she received more than 25 percent support.
The head of the meeting, who stated that the candidate received more than 75 percent votes, carried out Megawati’s election as the chairperson immediately.
This method of election was based on the results of the organization’s commission meeting, which had been read previously.
In addition, the head of the meeting also said that Megawati’s election as chairperson was not because of acclamation.
This was because 420 out of 432 Branch Council Boards (DPCs) declared their support for Megwati.
According to Frans, this meant that Megawati had already been elected as chairperson.
The meeting then continued with the reading of the results from the politic commission meeting.
