Japan Provides Aid for Nabire Earthquake Victims

TEMPO Interactive, Jakarta:The Japanese government, through the Japanese Embassy in Jakarta, has provided emergency aid to the Indonesian government amounting to US$104,000, around Rp933 million, in order to assist victims of the earthquakes that took place in Nabire, Papua, between November 26 and November 28, 2004.
The aid consists of 150 of plastic undersheets, 1,000 blankets and 996 mattresses.
The Japanese Ambassador to Indonesia, Yutaka Iimura, symbolically presented the aid to the Coordinating Minister for People’s Welfare, Alwi Shihab, on Tuesday (07/12) at the minister’s office in Jakarta.
In a press release, the Japanese Embassy stated that the aid was provided for humanitarian reasons and because of the good relationship between Japan and Indonesia.
The aid items reached Papua on Monday (06/12).
The Japanese government previously donated similar aid to Nabire, amounting to Rp1.3 billion, following the earthquake there in February 2004.
The Japanese government also donated aid amounting to US$124,000, around Rp112 billion. to the victims of an earthquake in Alor regency, East Nusatenggara in November 2004. (Sunariah-Tempo News Room)
