Sunday, 07 November, 2004 | 21:16 WIB

TEMPO Interactive, Jakarta:Jakarta Police chief Inspector General Firman Gani has imposed a high alert status on the city of Jakarta since Friday (05/11) in relation to efforts to secure the area before, during and after Eid-al-Fitr day.

The number of police troops deployed in securing Jakarta will amount to two-thirds of Jakarta Police personnel.

In securing Jakarta, the police will be aided by the Indonesian Military (TNI), the Ministry of Transportation, the Indonesian Radio Organization (Orari) and other security units.

“In practice, we will involve them more,” said Gani.
Before Eid-al-Fitr day, the police will focus on securing public places such as bus terminals and train stations.

On Eid-al-Fitr day, security will be focused on places of worships and empty residences.

Entertainment sites shall be tightly guarded until three days after Eid-al-Fitr day.

This high-alert status will be imposed for 16 days until November 21.

Gani also urged the members of the public to avoid dangerous places and be alert for kidnapping of students, several of which have taken places during the last few weeks.

“We will increase security at schools and observe and monitor activities of people who allegedly have plans to commit kidnappings,” said Gani. (Yophiandi –Tempo News Room)
