TEMPO Interactive, Jakarta:The police suspect that the bombing in front of the Australian Embassy in Kuningan, South Jakarta, on September 9, 2004, was committed by more than four people.
Up to Tuesday (21/09), the National Police headquarters (HQ) have named four people as the suspects in the bombing.
“We have other suspects in this case. We’re completing the investigation,” National Police chief Gen. Da’i Bachtiar said on Wednesday (22/09) at the Coordinating Minister for Political and Security Affairs office, Jakarta.
However, Bachtiar is yet to confirm the number of people who can be named as Kuningan bombing suspects.
The police are still examining the DNA of a person referred as the main suspect in the Kuningan bombing.
According to Bachtiar, several documents and testimonies from witnesses have indicated that this person might be a member of the group of Dr. Azahari, the alleged bombing mastermind.
This is because this person met Dr. Azahari and brought a car prior to the bombing incident.
Bachtiar said that the police were anticipating possible bomb threats after the election.
“As long as the principal bombers are yet to be found and arrested, bomb threats should be considered seriously following the election,” said Bachtiar.
So far, he added, the situation following election has been very conducive.
Even so, there has been a bomb threat that occurred outside of Jakarta.
On Tuesday (21/09), a scavenger found two black bags at a garbage site on Surya Kencana street, Bandung, West Java.
The bags contained a 8-mm mortar of M-80 81-mm caliber type and were secured by a West Java bomb squad team.
