Malaysian Government Promises to Stop Raids on Indonesian Illegal Workers

TEMPO Interactive, Jakarta:Following a meeting between Indonesian and Malaysian governments’ senior officers in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, on Monday (09/08), the Malaysian government has promised to temporarily stop raids on Indonesian illegal workers.
“The Malaysian government has promised to temporarily stop deploying volunteers in order to carry out raids and arrest Indonesian illegal workers,” said Indonesian foreign minister, Noer Hassan Wirajuda, in Jakarta on Thursday (12/08).
The Indonesian and Malaysian governments have also agreed to repatriate Indonesian illegal workers following the second round of the presidential election in Indonesia in October 2004.
The Malaysian government has agreed to investigate the shooting of Yunus, an Indonesian illegal worker from Ende, East Nusa Tenggara, in Selangor, on July 20.
“The Malaysian government has said that this incident was not according to the prevailing procedure and policy of the government,” said Wirajuda. (Faisal - Tempo News Room)
