Ten Years in Prison Sought for Marriott Bombing Defendant

TEMPO Interactive, Jakarta:Public prosecutor Muhammad Rum sought a 10-year jail sentence for Masrizal aka Tohir, 29, a defendant in the JW Marriott Hotel bombing case, during a trial held at the South Jakarta District Court on Tuesday (10/08). Tohir has been charged with terrorism and possession of illegal weapons.
The prosecutor also considers that Tohir of having committed terrorism acts and violated Article 6 of Government Regulation in lieu of Law No.1/2002 juncto Article 1 of Law No.15/2003 on Terrorism Crime Eradication and Article 1 sub section 1 of Emergency Law No.12/1951 juncto Article 55 sub section 1 of Criminal Code on illegal possession of weapons, ammunition, explosive materials and other weapons.
According to the prosecutor, Tohir together with Isma’il, Asmar Latin Sani, Noor Din Mohammad Top and Dr. Azahari committed the bombing at the JW Marriott Hotel in Jakarta on August 5, 2003, that claimed the lives of many people, injured tens of others and caused losses in amount of billions of Rupiah.
As reported earlier, Dr. Azahari and Noor Din Mohammad Top are still fugitives. Isma’il is a defendant in the same case but in a different trial. Asmar Latin Sani, who committed the bombing, died during the bombing incident.
Based on facts revealed during the trial, Tohir was assigned to provide transportation facilities for the bombing. “Tohir bought a new motorcycle used to survey the location,” said the prosecutor.
Isma’il and Dr. Azahari, who assembled the bombs, carried out a survey of the JW Marriott Hotel.
Noor Din Mohammad Top was the leader who ordered and financed the bombing.(Erma Yulihastin - Tempo News Room)
