Indonesia: No Plans to Reduce Diplomatic Relations with Myanmar
Thursday, 15 July, 2004 | 13:11 WIB
TEMPO Interactive, Jakarta:Despite the strong indications that the Indonesian Embassy in Yangoon, Myanmar, was bugged, the Indonesian government does not yet have any plans to reduce its diplomatic relations with Myanmar to a lower level.
”We don’t want to rush into making a decision,” Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ spokesman, Marty Natalegawa, told reporters in Jakarta on Wednesday (14/07).
However, according to him, the Indonesian government was taking the matter very seriously.
The Indonesian Department of Foreign Affairs, represented by the East Asian and Pacific region’s director Natalegawa, met with Myanmar Ambassador to Indonesia, Kyaw Myint, on Tuesday (13/07) to file a protest to the Myanmar government.
Myint promised to deliver this protest to his government in Yangoon.
Natalegawa went on to that the Indonesian government has requested Myanmar to take further measures in settling this matter.
“We expect Myanmari government to confirm that such a bugging incident will never happen again on us,” he said.
No information has yet been found regarding the motive behind the incident. (Faisal-Tempo News Room)
