Indonesian Embassy in Myanmar Bugged
Tuesday, 13 July, 2004 | 08:46 WIB

TEMPO Interactive, Jakarta:An Indonesian joint security team, consisting of members of the State Code Board (Lemsaneg), the State Intelligence Agency (BIN) and the Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, found bugging equipment in the wall of the Indonesian Ambassador to Myanmar’s office at the Indonesian Embassy in Yangoon, Myanmar.

House of Representatives (DPR) Defense and Safety Commission member, Djoko Susilo, confirmed this to the Koran Tempo newspaper on Sunday (11/07) in Jakarta.

The investigation showed that Myanmar military junta intelligence officers had illegally bugged all activities and conversations by Indonesian diplomats at the Indonesian Embassy in Yangoon.

According to Djoko, such bugging is shameful and can be considered as a violation of diplomatic ethics, adding that the Indonesian government must condemn the bugging.

He also accused the Myanmar government of not showing any appreciation to political and diplomatic support given by Indonesia to Myanmar, through the UN, ASEAN and other regional forums, while Myanmar was pressured by the international community.

Djoko will likely demand that Indonesian foreign minister Hassan Wirajuda review Indonesia’s diplomatic relationship with Myanmar by recalling the Indonesian Ambassador to Myanmar for a consultation or by decreasing Indonesia’s representative level in Yangoon.
