Marriott Bombing Suspects Sentenced to 3 Years’ Imprisonment

TEMPO Interactive, Jakarta:South Jakarta District Court judges sentenced Malikul Zurkoni, 33, a suspect in the JW Marriott Hotel bombing that took place in 2003, to 3 years’ imprisonment on Wednesday (23/06).

This ruling, read out by the presiding judge Sucahyo Padmo Wasono was seven years less than that demanded by the public prosecutor.

The judges concluded that Zurkoni was proven guilty of carrying out an evil conspiracy and helping in an act of terrorism act, in reference to to article 6 juncto article 15 Government Regulation in lieu of Law number 1/2003 on Terrorism Crime Eradication.

In this case, Zurkoni is considered of having helped move six bags of explosive materials from his residence to a shop house belonging to Datuk Raja Ameh in Pekanbaru, Riau.

The materials contained PETN (Penta Eritriol Tetra Nitrate) high-explosive elements and were similar to materials found in the JW Marriott Hotel bombing location on August 5, 2003.

Several other suspects had also been tried in the case of Marriott bombing.

Two suspects, Slamet Widodo and Lutfi Fadilah, were convicted to 3 years’ imprisonment at the South Jakarta District Court on Tuesday (15/06).

They were both found guilty for having withheld information regarding an act of terrorism.

Another suspect, Mohamad Rais, was sentenced to seven years’ imprisonment by South Jakarta District Court judges on May 18, 2004.

Rais was found guilty for having packed and helped deliver explosive materials from Pekanbaru to Bengkulu.

The said explosive materials were then used for the bombing of JW Marriott Hotel.

The heaviest sentence was given to Sardona Siliwangi bin Azwar as he was found guilty of having kept and possessed explosive materials that were then used for terrorism activities.

Bin Azwar was then sentenced to 10 years’ imprisonment.
