Stockholm Prosecutors’ Office Still Waiting for Evidence
23 April 2004
TEMPO Interactive, Jakarta:The Prosecutors’ Office in Stockholm, Sweden, has once again requested the help of the Indonesian authorities as regards providing some physical evidence.
Indonesian National Police headquarters officers promised they would do this when a team from the Stockholm Prosecutors’ Office, led by Tomas Lindstrand, conducted a preliminary investigation in Indonesia in March this year.
“They (the Stockholm Prosecutors’ Office) have demanded physical evidence in the form of phone call records, disks and fund transfer receipts,” said TEMPO News Room’s source by phone on Wednesday (21/4).
Lindstrand also demanded the National Police officers to send some Indonesian witnesses who could not be questioned during the visit made by the Stockholm Prosecutors’ Office visit to Indonesia.
The Prosecutors’ Office has made a summary of its investigation result in Indonesia during the period of March 15-21.
The TEMPO News Room’s source confirmed that Hasan Tiro and other Free Aceh Movement (GAM) leaders residing in Sweden would be summoned for questioning. In handling the case, Lindstrand also requested the cooperation of Interpol.
The Stockholm Prosecutors’ Office has requested the Indonesian authorities to find out whether or not the bank accounts under the name of the abovementioned GAM leaders exist in Indonesia.
“No bank accounts in Sweden have been listed under GAM,” this unanimous source said quoting Lindstrand.
Indonesian Department of Foreign Affairs’ spokesman Marty Natalegawa said that the Stockholm Prosecutors’ Office had investigated all bank accounts and transfers under the GAM name in Sweden but was yet to reveal the results.
“We are also conducting a similar investigation in Indonesia,” he said.
Lindstrand confirmed to Tempo News Room that he had requested additional legal assistance from the Indonesian Government. But he declined to reveal exactly what assistance he was referring to.
“I am yet to decide the next step in this case,” said Lindstrand by e-mail on Tuesday (20/4).
According to Lindstrand, he is yet to deliver the name of witnesses in Indonesia that will testify in Sweden following the trial of Hasan Tiro and the other GAM leaders residing in Sweden.
He also declined to reveal the temporary result of the preliminary investigation that he had carried out during his visit to Indonesia. (Faisal - Tempo News Room )
