US$3 Million from Norway to Stop Illegal Logging in Indonesia
01 Maret 2004

TEMPO Interactive, Jakarta:The Norwegian Government is to provide US$3 million to help stop illegal logging activities in Indonesia.

The Norwegian Ambassador to Indonesia Bjorn Blokhus made this statement to reporters following a seminar on handling illegal logging in Jakarta on Monday (1/3).

According to Blokhus, these funds shall be allocated for the handling of illegal logging in Indonesia up to 2005.

“After that, we will carry out a further evaluation regarding this matter,” he added.

This cooperation between the Indonesian and Norwegian governments as regards the handling of illegal logging has been going on now for ten years.

However, Blokhus declined to give details of the allocation of the funds.

Arief Yuwono, secretary to the State Minister for the Environment, said that the cooperation between the two countries has been focused more on technical matters.

This cooperation included development of environment matters as well as the establishment of policies regarding the environment.
