The death of Wahyu Hidayat, a student of the Public Administration Institute (STPDN) in Jatinangor, West Java, on September 3, 2003, comes as an alert for the Indonesian education system at the university level. Hidayat died as a result of violent hazing committed by his seniors at the STPDN. Prior to Hidayat’s incident, many cases of student deaths were also caused by ferocious acts that were committed during the orientation programs at several universities. And Hidayat is the second victim at the STPDN during the last five years. The irony of the incident is that a violent or militaristic method is still being used by students to enforce discipline on campus. While on the other hand, these students are supposed to have adept intelligence and understanding of human rights. Most participants of last week’s poll agree that violent practices in universities should be terminated.

Next Week's Online Poll:The idea to amend Law No. 15/2003 on Anti-terrorism has been brought up again following the plan to give a bigger role to the Indonesian Military (TNI) in eradicating terrorist acts which are growing by the number in recent months. Minister of Justice, Yusril Ihza Mahendra, said that the amendment would be required to reinforce the role of TNI in the eradication of terrorism in Indonesia.

This has aroused various opinions. Imparsial, an NGO that monitors the implementation of human rights in Indonesia, considers this plan as very dangerous. “We think such a plan is very dangerous because it would justify a permanent role for TNI in the matters of law and security,” said Imparsial Program Director, Rachland Nashidik.

Meanwhile, the government thinks that TNI’s involvement and its bigger role in enforcing law and security are anticipation steps to prevent another bomb attack. Should the TNI be given a bigger role in handling terrorism matters? Log on www.tempointeractive.com and tell us what you think.
