Former Human Rights Activist Sentenced to 1,5 Years in Prison

TEMPO Interactive, Jakarta: Another leader of an islamic organization was sentenced to 1,5 years in prison on Thursday in the same attack case tried by the Central Jakarta District Court.
Munarman a commander for the Islamic Defender Squad an organization under the Islamic Defender Front was handed down the same verdict as the leader of the FPI by the court.
The judges said on June 1st,the day the attack occured against the Natioanl Alliance for Freedom of Faith and Religious Beliefs (AKKBB), Munarman was initially assigned by Hisbut Tahrir Indonesia to secure a protest against fuel price hike outside the state palace. But the protest went into chaos as the grup of islamic organization met with the AKKBB which was holding a rally to support the existence of a religious sect deemed as devious by most national islamic organizations.
Before joining the islamic organization Munarman is known to many local human rights activists as a fervent human rights activist and a lawyer for the Legal Aid Foundation, a well known human rights advocacy group in the country.
