TEMPO Interactive, Jakarta: The government is to issue a regulation on terrestrial digital television programs in Indonesia.
Currently it is considering several different standardizations from the United States, China, Europe and Japan.
Widiadnyana Merati, Director General of Communication Means and Information Dissemination at the Information and Communication Department, explained that setting up the terrestrial digital television standardization would be a road map for broadcasting providers to carry out migration process from the analog to the digital system.
“From the road map and strategy to be discussed by the government and industry players, the time and method of frequency allocation and digital television broadcasting licenses will be decided,” said Widiadnyana in a press statement in Jakarta yesterday (5/2).
Based on the National Team for Analog to Digital Broadcasting System Migration's recommendations, according to Widiadyana, the government is considering whether or not to adopt standardization from the United States' television system committee.
Other standardizations that are being considered are digital mobile broadcasting from China, digital video broadcasting from Europe or integrated services digital broadcasting from Japan.
“In a parallel way, the government will also decide the local definitions of receiver top box set usage,” he said.
“The government hopes for public input regarding this policy,” said Widiadyana.
Alexander Rusli, a member of special staff for the Information and Communication Minister, said that for the time being the standard recommended for Indonesian television broadcasting is digital video broadcasting from Europe.
According to him, this standard is chosen because it is widely used by television broadcasting agencies and television set producer.
