Japan Asks for LNG Extensions

TEMPO Interactive, Jakarta: Liquefied natural gas (LNG) buyer, Japan, still hopes that Indonesia will supply its gas needs.

Eiji Sekine, LNG Senior Managing Director of Japan Corporation, said he hoped for LNG purchase contract extensions from Indonesia.

“We want to have additional supplies,” he said yesterday (17/1).

Japan wants an extension of LNG purchase contracts amounting to as much as 12 million tons per year.

The contract of LNG sales to Japan ends in 2010.
So far the government has not yet decided whether to allow contract extensions or to transfer gas to domestic needs.

Sekine said that Japan is Indonesia's largest LNG buyer.

According to him, President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, when visiting Japan, talked about economic cooperation, including LNG purchase.

So far, said Sekine, Japan has not transferred purchases to LNG producers in Qatar or Oman.
