Sofyan: Open Source Hampers Government's Activity

TEMPO Interactive, Jakarta: Information and Communication Minister Sofyan Djalil said that the use of open source as software on state-owned computers is yet to be implemented today. The reason is that it may halt government's activities.

Sofyan explained that there were three reasons. First, the government must upgrade its computers' performance before using open source. Second, the quality of human resources in the government's office is still low.

“The situation will affect the continuity of the open source utilization process,” said Sofyan yesterday (01/15) in Jakarta. In addition, the third reason was concerned with driver support for various means that support the computers.

According to him, some software are yet to be supportive in combining the computer's performance with other devices such as printing machines. However, the government will support the use of open sources for long-term usage.

The Department of Research and Technology will involve eight universities as developing agents of Indonesia GO Open Source (IGOS) program. They include Bandung Institute of Technology, Sepuluh November Institute of Technology, Gadjah Mada University, University of Indonesia, Udayana University, Deli Polytechnics, Batam Polytechnics and President University.
