TEMPO Interactive, Jakarta: It has been predicted that Indonesia will start experiencing a lack of coal in 2025.
Based on production of 300 million tons that year, according to Soedjoko Tirtosoekotjo, Executive Director of the Coal Mining Association, in 2025 Indonesia be lack around 100 million tons of coal.
“Demand will increase due to the presidential instruction for coal to be used by the State Electricity Company,” he said last weekend.
Tirtosoekotjo explained that 100 million tons of the total production of 300 million tons would be exported and the rest would be for domestic use.
With new power plants, the demand for coal will rise from 25 million to 90 million tons in 2015 and to 200 million tons in 2025.
Coal production has shown a dramatic increase.
In 1994, total production was only 31.7 tons but by 2004 had grown 132.4 million tons in 2004.
Currently Indonesia is in the third largest coal exporting country in the world.
With such a significant increase in production rise, said, Tirtosoekotjo there should be no concern over a lack of coal, especially as there are now more the coal mining companies.
Currently there are 73 companies under work contract, 28 companies in production, and 22 companies under construction, totaling 50 new coal mining companies.
